Aethercon VII is coming up in just over a week and a half! Aethercon is an online RPG convention - join from anywhere, play from anywhere - and best of all, it's free!
I'll be there for four different events:
Having learned of the threat of undead Nazi Franz Heimglimmer from Jenny Chapman, the heroes set out for the It's A Lock self-storage facility to destroy Heimglimmer's first cache of soul-fetishes. At the site, they discover that a security guard is now patrolling at night for intruders. Marco sneaks into the site and sets a fire while the rest converge on the storage locker. Troy picks the lock and the group cautiously investigates. Inside, they find a vase full of small objects - the fetishes - and several SS uniforms. The heroes nab the fetishes and exit, rendez-vousing with Marco on the way, only to be confronted by two thugs, one with a gun and one with a lighter. Ryo makes short work of the thugs with his katana, killing both before they can react. The team retrieves the lighter and CP and Matt discover that it is a ritual talisman that functions like a flamethrower.
Jenny calls Mariana and informs her that Heimglimmer sent the thugs because the heroes tripped some sort of magic alarm. She has neutralized a cultist that Heimglimmer partnered her with to secure the second cache, which is located in a tomb in a local cemetery. She directs the team there while she attempts to determine the location of the third cache. The heroes arrive and Troy once again picks the lock on the tomb; when the heroes enter, however, they are trapped by a spell that sucks them down into the very stones! Only with help from Mariana and Marco, who avoided the trap, are they saved. The second cache retrieved, they head for Jenny Chapman's home, where she is preparing a ritual to stop Heimglimmer.
Jenny, however, is dead - apparently her cultist partner broke free and murdered her. In the kitchen, the team finds a humanoid figure fashioned from clay with the Hebrew word "Justice" inscribed on its forehead. CP and Matt believe that placing the fetishes in this figure would power it, but to be sure, CP speaks with the spirit of Jenny, who confirms their theory. CP places the fetishes, and the golem rises to seek out the evil mummy...
After the Battle of Newport, the Legion is ordered to Boston to await transport elsewhere in the war. On arrival, they find the city buzzing with the news of a conflict between French Admiral d'Estaing and their recent commanding officer, Major General Sullivan. Apparently Sullivan had made disparaging comments about the Admiral and the French forces in general after his defeat in Newport. However, the fires of this conflict have been fanned by a series of letters attributed to Sullivan, and now a duel seems imminent, threatening the French/Continental alliance, even though Sullivan denies writing the letters.
The team quickly determines the source of publication of the letters, a Boston newspaper called the Herald of Freedom. Visiting the office of the paper, they meet with Edward Freeman, who produces the letters but strangely cannot remember how he received them. Godot immediately suspects another mind-wiper is involved. Francis inspects the letters and challenges the signature as not quite matching Sullivan's handwriting, but that alone would not serve to prove the letters are forged.
The letters arrived in a newly-crafted leather folio. Investigation of the tradesfolk of Boston leads the heroes to the leatherworker who made it, and he in turn directs them to the boarding rooms of one Josiah Waters. At the boarding house, Suzanna turns into a mouse and reconnoiters. Narrowly avoiding a housecat, she discovers that there are three men in the room with easy access to pistols and wearing knives, as well as a well-dressed man working at a desk.
With this intelligence, Godot knocks on the door and informs the well-dressed man that he found this folio and wanted to return it. The man smiles and reaches for the folio, and attempts a mind wipe on Godot. Godot yells a warning and the battle is on.
Quick action by Francis and Jacoby badly injures the superhuman, while Suzanna shifts to a raccoon and runs for the desk to find evidence. The thugs fire on the heroes but with minimal effect, and Godot's confusion power throws them off balance. As they attempt to retreat, bringing their leader with them, Francis kills two easily and Jacoby finishes the last, at which point the superhuman surrenders and identifies himself as a member of the Order of the Seventh Circle. The heroes persuade him to confess his forgeries, supported by the draft papers that Suzanna retrieved (at some risk of attack from the cat) and the duel is averted.
The Kickstarter for the new edition of Savage Worlds, the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (formerly known as Savage Worlds Black) funded in less than 5 minutes, and is approaching the $250K mark as of this blog post. As a licensed publisher (now called an "Ace"), I have the draft core book in my possession, but there will be no spoilers just yet. I will say that the layout looks great and some of the rules changes (notably the Chase rules) are a significant improvement.
With "SWADE" releasing to the world later this year, what are Happy Monster's plans for our existing and new products? Children of the Apocalypse will be getting an update - we will make the new edition available to everyone who purchased the old one. Future adventures published for the Children of the Apocalypse setting will be written for SWADE.
More excitingly, Happy Monster Press will also be launching the Legion of Liberty setting in a Kickstarter planned for March 2019! This will be a revolutionary war superheroes setting using the SWADE core rules only. We will be providing a Jumpstart for backers of SWADE that gives the flavor of the setting and includes a playable adventure. Look for that Jumpstart on DriveThruRPG soon as well.
The fight began with Ryo diving in to attempt to save the witches from the attacking Sword of Adam thugs. Ryo succeeded in taking down two immediately, but most of the rest, including their leader, piled on and attempted to take him down. CP and Marco joined in, and managed to drop two more of the thugs, while the witches made a hasty retreat from the melee. Matt also engaged in the melee with his switchblades, while Troy fired his wrist rocket and Mariana threatened the goons with her Glock.
Given that the Sword of Adam thugs were armed only with baseball bats, the threat of the Glock was effective, and two of them ran immediately. The remaining two, including Dan, the leader, fought valiantly but went down to hard attacks from CP and Marco.
The Seniors tied up the remaining thugs and removed Dan's Egyptian amulet. On closer inspection, Mariana found more hieroglyphics on the back of the amulet, reading "Hear Me!" CP, Matt, and Troy all examined the amulet; CP determined it was a talisman containing a ritual, Matt that the "Hear Me" phrase was an activation phrase, and Troy that the talisman was likely cursed. With the amulet removed, Dan appeared to have a complete change of heart, vowing to change majors from Engineering to Theology and preach peaceful dialogue between opposing views.
Shortly after midterms, a woman named Jenny Chapman contacted Mariana and asked to speak with her, saying that she had heard from Lisa Gray that Mariana and her friends could handle "hauntings". CP and Troy remembered Chapman's name from a list of members of the Neo-Birkhuhn, the Nazi Black Guard occult group that the heroes had tangled with previously. They opted to meet Chapman, but to approach her with caution. Chapman explained that when the heroes defeated the Birkhuhn back in their freshman year, they actually empowered the undead Franz Heimglimmer and gave him the power to return as a mummy. Horrified by this discovery, Chapman wants the heroes to help her destroy Heimglimmer before he ascends to immortality.
Eliminating the undead Nazi requires destruction of three caches of fetishes. The first is stored at the It's A Lock self storage facility, and Chapman directs the heroes there while she attempts to determine the location of the other two...
